Student Support & Special Educational Needs

At Churchill Academy & Sixth Form we care, inspire and challenge all our students, regardless of disability, additional or special educational need, and help them to achieve the very best they can.

We are passionate about ensuring our students are educated to the highest standards and they are supported in becoming confident individuals, successful learners and responsible citizens.

To assist our students in achieving these high expectations we have a very experienced Student Support team:

Teaching Assistants

Access to the curriculum for all students, particularly the most vulnerable, is very important to us so we have a team of Teaching Assistants who work within faculties; planning and differentiating work for pupils to ensure they achieve as much as possible and can also learn independently.

Literacy Skills Development

Part of our work is to improve literacy skills across the Academy through teaching and modelling of literacy in all subjects. However, students with very weak literacy skills are withdrawn in years 7 and 8 and follow a highly structured literacy programme to develop their skills further.

The Oasis

The Oasis is an important wing of Student Support managed by Ms Natasha Bluck. It is an area for students during social times where they can make new friends, eat, play games and talk to a Teaching Assistant’s if they have any worries or concerns.

The Oasis also provides a variety of exciting motivational and inspirational opportunities for all students such as going on trips, meeting others in our community and attending group sessions such as to develop social skills or develop working memory: all with the aim of developing vital life skills.

Study Pod

The Study Pod is a homework and project club. It runs on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes from 1.15pm until 1.55pm in the Learning Pod. Any child who needs extra support with their homework, project work or revision can use this resource which is run by Teaching Assistants, who have vast subject knowledge to draw upon.
