Churchill Academy & Sixth Form

Sponsored walk and Trek 2019

Year 7 & 8 - Sponsored Walk along the Strawberry Line
Year 9 & 10 - Sponsored Trek on the Mendip Hills

On Tuesday 18th June 2019, all students and staff will be swapping their books and pencil cases for walking boots and rucksacks.  This is a fantastic event that is unique to Churchill and has taken place for many years.
The Sponsored Trek involves following a planned route from school out to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where pupils “treasure hunt” for checkpoints before returning to school. Teams gain points for their House by visiting as many checkpoints as they can within the time limit.  The minimum distance walked is about 10km, whilst ambitious teams may cover as many as 20km. Checkpoints are staffed by members of our Sixth Form and staff walk the route between checkpoints.  Extra safety cover is provided by the Avon and Somerset Cliff Rescue team.

The Sponsored Walk involves walking with staff from school to join the Strawberry Line.  All students will have their packed lunch at Winscombe RFC before returning along the same route back to school which is a minimum distance of 10km. Many teams will have time to summit the nearby trig point bringing their total walked distance to 16km.

If your child is not able to walk on the day then please advise their Head of House so that alternative provision can be made for them.

In recent years the sponsorship from these events has raised funds for Bristol Children's Hospital, WaterAid and the Teenage Cancer Trust. This year all students have been asked to raise money for the Academy's current nominated charity: Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Half of the money raised will go the the PTA who will put it towards a project that directly benefits our students.

Students have attended Trek and Walk assemblies and have received a letter with details of all the kit needed and sponsorship forms. Students will be out of school all day but will return in time for coaches. It is a non-uniform day for all students taking part.

Inhalers and medication

If your child has asthma and needs an inhaler it is vitally important that they bring this with them on the day of the walk and trek.  They will need to show this to staff and without it they will not be allowed to go out and will have to remain in school for the day. Similarly, any medications they require need to be with them on the day.
If your child no longer needs to use an inhaler and you have not yet advised us, please ensure that you do so – or if your child does need this and you have not yet advised us, please let us know.  If they come to school without any medication even if they have not used it ‘for years’ they will have to stay on site.  If you have any doubts about this, please contact Miss Collins with the most recent information.
