Churchill Academy

Bath University and Wesport Summer School Games

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and young leaders involved in the Wesport Summer School Games at the University of Bath this week. As a result of excellent performances in the North Somerset Athletics event, Churchill Academy was offered a small number of places to take part in the Summer Games Programme for Year 7 girls and Year 8 boys. This event was attended by over 1,400 students from across the South West in a variety of events. Our students then competed in track and field events against representatives from neighbouring counties. Official results are still to be published, however fantastic running by Olivia Rear (100m), Lauren Powell (200m) and Ben Wheeler (300m) saw each coming first in their heats.

On the same day, a select few of our Year 9 Rugby team had been invited to the University of Bath to take part in a fitness testing and G&T player development programme. This was a result of the students impressive performances in rugby this year in the Super 8 competition. Our students had opportunity to use the expertise of the strength and conditioning / fitness testing departments to analyse their performance and compare against national averages. This was a fantastic development opportunity for our students to accurately see where they can improve their current fitness levels. Thanks must go the Bath staff dedicating their time to helping our students develop over the course of the day.

Student comments:

William Pearce (Inside Centre / Kick Taker): "It was a good experience, very formative and I learnt a lot. I think this helped me with my future aspirations and it was really useful with my BTEC Sport work."

Oliver Clough (Flanker / Tough Tackler / Sprint Champion):  "I loved it! The testing was really beneficial, and I'm really looking forward to retesting again soon to see my improvements. It was a fantastic opportunity to use and see excellent facilities and I would love to get into University of Bath when I'm older."
