Chess Qualification News
Congratulations to Churchill Chess Team who qualified for the National Schools Chess Championships. The team of Max Walker, John Skeen, Peter Skeen, Scarlett Donovan, Owen Griffiths and Toby Wilson travelled to Bristol Grammar School on Monday, 19th November to take part in the qualification event.
In the first round against QEH School, Toby put up a good display and the experience of Max, John, Peter and Scarlett proved too strong with Churchill winning 4-2. In the second round Churchill lost 5-1 to Sir Thomas Rich but a special mention goes to Owen who managed a gallant draw, John also secured a half point. This loss meant the team needed to win the last game by three points to secure a place in the National Schools Chess Championships. With Max and John both securing quick victories against Bristol Grammar, it was left to the younger team members to guarantee progression. Further victories from Peter and Owen left Scarlett requiring a half point from her final game. In a tense battle which could have gone either way, drawing a large crowd Scarlett managed to pull off a fantastic combination to turn the game and then checkmate her opponent. The final score was Churchill 5 BGS 1. The next round will take place in January, with the draw taking place in a few weeks’ time.
Chess Club continues on Wednesday lunchtimes in W6 under the guidance of Mr Jones and Mr Skeen; all abilities are welcome to attend.
