Chess Team Qualify for National Finals

Congratulations to Churchill Chess Team who have qualified to take part in the United Kingdom’s leading and most prestigious Team Competition for schools.  This competition, formerly the Sunday Times and then the Times Championship, and now with the generous sponsorship of Winchester College, has existed continuously since 1957.

On Monday 14th November Churchill travelled to Bristol Grammar School to take part in regional qualification for this National competition.   Nine strong teams attended from the Bristol area, Hereford and Gloucestershire.  Churchill A put in a fine performance finishing second overall a gaining qualification to National stages.  Churchill B also attended and finished a very creditable 7th place.  Noteworthy performances were by Alex Webber and Peter Skeen who both scored 3 out of 3 wins.    The full squad was John Skeen, Max Walker, Ben Webber, Reece White, Alex Webber,  Peter Skeen, Olie Rooke, Anuj Gupta, Will Smith, Brenton Allen, Lily Murphy, Callum Bonetti and Jenson Hathaway. 

A very well done to all the squad and we are looking forward to the next round after Christmas.  Thanks also to Mr Tinker and Mr Shorland for giving the team some good games in school over the past few weeks.  

Chess club continues every Tuesday lunchtime in W6 under the guidance of Mr Skeen, Mr Jones and Mr Lim.  All standards are welcome.
