Commemorating the Battle of the Somme

Churchill Academy's Annual World War 1 Battlefields Trip took place this week with 32 students visiting the Somme and the area around Ypres, in Belgium. Students were present at a daily ceremony taking place at the Thiepval Memorial in France to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme. The following day 2 students, Charlotte and Amber, laid a wreath at the daily act of remembrance at the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony on behalf of the Academy. The message, written by Scarlett Gue (8WZT), reads:

"We will never forget those who gave their today for our tomorrow."

Head of Humanities Jo Gill said: "The students were impeccably behaved throughout the trip and everyone was deeply moved by the memorials and graves that we visited. They were a credit to the Academy."
