Maths Challenge Season

Maths Olympiad for Girls

The maths challenge season is in full swing and it is already looking like a vintage year with incredible results so far. It started well with the Maths Olympiad for girls, a competition only for the elite female mathematicians in the country. Four girls from Churchill qualified, Hannah Callcut, Emma Griffiths, Jasmine Rooke and Emma Vaughn.  All girls qualified for certificates and the two Emmas did superbly getting certificates of distinction.

Senior Maths Challenge

The Senior Challenge, a national qualification for Years 12 and 13, also produced amazing results with 38 students qualifying for certificates, five gold, 15 silver and 18 bronze.  The gold certificate winners were John Skeen, Dylan Morris, Sam Smith, James Daws and Stan Hemmings. All five qualified for the more challenging Kangaroo International paper. James and Stan's results were superb as both boys are only in Year 10. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Regional Senior Maths Challenge

The regional finals of the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge took place on Wednesday. Churchill sent a very strong team consisting of Emma Griffiths, John Skeen, Cam Leggett and Stan Hemmings. They started by solving eight out of ten very difficult questions scoring 48/60 in Round 1.  The second, cross number, round was even better with the team scoring 65/66. The very difficult last round saw a brilliant score of 54/60. Churchill came second in the region, just missing out qualifying for the national finals by a point or two.  This maintains the amazing run of five consecutive years of Churchill in the top three teams in the region and winning it twice.
