Primary Transition Project
Moving up to Secondary school can be daunting, so we have been working in partnership with Banwell Primary School to offer a program that invited a small group Year 6 students to the Academy to take part in activities. The aims of the project was to improve confidence, reassure students and their families, and work in collaboration with Banwell to provide a well-structured and smooth transition for the students.
The students took part in a series of sessions at Banwell to start with, including circle time discussions, arts and crafts activities and games to encourage problem solving, team work and independence. Then they came up to the Academy for four sessions: a tour with Year 7 students, a pastoral tour with the house mentors, catering practice and learning how to use the computers and LRC. The activities were fun and challenged the students to try something new in a small and supportive environment. The final session, involving Banwell and Churchill, was a family event, where parents and carers could see the confidence and support their children will have at the Academy. They also had a chance to meet key staff from both schools. We gave out a booklet with vital information and the students were awarded a certificate to celebrate their achievements during the project.
The project was an outstanding success that has been enjoyed and appreciated by the students and the families. We are particularly proud to have developed this project in partnership with Banwell Primary School, and look forward to continued collaboration with all our primary colleagues to ensure a smooth and effective transition from Year 6 to 7.
