Regional Success for Churchill Mathematicians
On Wednesday 14th March, a mixed Year 8 and Year 9 team consisting of Sarah Browne, James Dams, Stan Hemmings and Cameron Leggett competed at the UKMT Junior Team Maths Challenge at Millfield School.
The all-day event consisted of four rounds, each of a different format and each more mathematically challenging than the last. The students had to combine individual mathematical flair with solid teamwork in order to succeed – and succeed they did! Though Churchill scored impressively across all of the rounds, marks of 60 out of 60 in the ‘group problems’ and 54 out of 56 in the ‘cross number’ were particularly impressive.
Tired but proud, the team eagerly awaited the results at the end of the day. After the third and second place teams had been announced, the table quietly joked about winning. The students were then completely flabbergasted when the UKMT representative read out the names of the winners – Churchill Academy! The 24 other teams, many of whom came from independent schools, graciously applauded as the team collected their certificates and prizes.
The team would like to thank Mr Jones, who graciously gave up a number of lunch times to run practice sessions and Mr Woods who accompanied them on the day. Churchill now go on to compete at the national final in London in June.
Congratulations to all involved. A fantastic result!
