Churchill Academy

Sparking Science

Churchill has hosted two days of activities aimed at developing the confidence and communication skills of both Churchill and Year 4 pupils from Banwell, Blagdon, Churchill, St Martin’s, Winscombe and Wrington Primary schools. Run by Churchill Academy and the Weston-super-Mare Soroptomists, the two days were designed to empower and enthuse the students who took part whilst challenging gender stereotypes. Churchill girls from Year 12 and Year 7 led the Year 4 girls through three science investigations. Activities included making snail slime and investigating how exercise affects breathing. Meanwhile the boys choreographed a street dance aided by Year 7, 8 and 9 boys from the Academy. On return to their schools the Year 4 boys will teach their street dance to the girls and the girls will teach the boys how to do the science investigations and explain how the results of the investigations can be applied. A messy, energetic but exciting day was had by all!
