Churchill Academy

Spelling Bee

On Monday 9th March, ten fantastic Churchill students took part in the final of the annual Churchill Academy Spelling Bee. After many rounds fighting off tough competition, Scarlett Donovan of Hanover House was victorious finishing in first place after correctly spelling challenging words including monochrome, opaque, translucent and bludgeon!  Woody Gilson (Stuart House)  was placed second and Erica  Heiermann (Tudor) took third prize. All finalists have also investigated spelling strategies with Mr Grimmett and they and will be sharing these with Year 7 students soon.

For the first time the competition had an added House element. On this occasion all Houses were represented in the final and, although it was a Hanover student who won the overall student prize, Tudor House scored the highest combined points to claim  first place followed by Hanover and Stuart.

As well as an audience challenge, those present also enjoyed spelling master-class from Mr Wilkinson (Languages), Mr Grimmett (Director of English) and Mr Hildrew who played off for the highly coveted title of 'Staff Spelling Bee Champion'. In the end Mr Wilkinson fought off a strong challenge from Mr Grimmett and retained his title.  In addition Mr Hartley was a fantastic wordsmith ensuring all ran smoothly. Special thanks to official photographer Miss Dunne.

Congratulations and well done to all of the finalists: Martin Bures - Tudor, Maddie Pole - Stuart, Daisy Edmunds - Tudor, Scarlett Donovan - Hanover, Christopher Caddy Hvalkof - Tudor, Phoebe Johnston - Windsor, Zach Harbun - Tudor, Anna Knight - Windsor, Woody Gilson - Stuart, Erica Heiermann - Tudor.
