Sports Awards Evening
Sports Awards Evening makes a glittering debut
Thursday evening saw the first ever Churchill Academy & Sixth Form Sports Awards Evening take place. Nearly 300 young sportsmen and women celebrated their achievements in the glittering surroundings of Cadbury House Hotel. Following a showreel of highlights from the year and video messages from Sky Sports presenters (including Churchill alumnus Gemma Nash), Mr Hart introduced guest of honour Lee Byrne, retired Wales and British Lions Rugby Union full back. Lee handed out awards including players of the year in rugby, netball, football, hockey, rounders, cricket, athletics and swimming, before Mr Hayne introduced the Academy’s Roll of Honour for students who have reached elite level in their chosen sports and represented either county, region or country. The Team of the Year, a hotly fought competition, was awarded to the Year 9 Boys’ Rugby team for their double-championship winning season last year. The final awards, which included a prize of a year’s family membership at The Club at Cadbury House, were for Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year. The deserving winners were Esme Bird and Will Pearce.
Students were treated to a delicious meal before letting their hair down on the dance floor and enjoying the raffle with generously donated prizes including sports equipment, a rugby ball signed by the New Zealand team, a signed Bristol City shirt and more. Those who had successfully met the criteria were also able to pick up their house colours and Inspire awards and badges which they can now wear proudly as part of their uniform.
The evening was a fantastic success and thanks go to Team PE and all the Academy and Cadbury staff who helped make it happen. We’re sure that this will become a regular part of the Academy calendar as our young people continue to commit themselves to achieving their personal best in sport!
