Sports Day 2022
Sports Day 2022 was another epic day at Churchill Academy & Sixth Form! Postponed for rain, then brought forward due to a forecast heatwave, Sports Day squeezed into a day of perfect weather. Faces (and arms and legs) were painted, mascot costumes were donned, competitors limbered up, and the sound system was cranked up to 11...we were ready to go!
Hundreds of competitors took part, including teams of ten in the titanic tug of war battle on the top field during the morning session. The 3G hosted standing long jump, high jump, hurdles, bat and ball, speed bounce, and legendary welly wang, whilst the field (javelin, discus and shot) and middle distance events (1500m and 800m) were on the bottom field.
After a lunch break, everyone gathered trackside for the sprints and relays. Team spirit and house pride was everywhere to be seen, as the tension mounted towards the final result, and the award of trophies.
The Tug of War went to Tudor House, which was a sign of things to come. Despite only winning outright in Year 7, Tudor's strong performance across all the events saw them pull well clear of Stuart House in second, and Lancaster House in third.
Eight school records fell in 2022, including a Year 10 shot putt record which was set in 1991 and a Year 9 1500m record set in 1990:
A total of 30 further house records were broken:
As ever, our student journalists were out and about on the day, and turned around their fantastic edition of the Churchill Sport Report in record time too:
