Variety Show 2018

The annual Variety Show is the culmination of the Sixth Form’s Performing Arts course, as students organise, produce, direct, and perform in a final extravaganza at an out-of-school venue. For the third year running, students took up the hospitality of Howards’ Citroen car dealership in Weston-super-Mare to stage the show, transforming the showroom into a circus-themed cabaret club for one night only!

The opening number, The Greatest Show from the film The Greatest Showman, was a breath-taking staging with all the epic ambition of Hollywood, and the quality of the show did not let up from there. There was musical theatre, dance, sketch comedy, songs, and drama. No matter what the students turned their hands to, it turned to gold!

Standout performances are hard to pick out, but included Melissa Harrold and Jazz Morley for their West-End-worthy singing; Izzy Read’s incredible characterisation in serious drama The Things I Know To Be True and then a hilarious comic monologue; Matt Hogg, Sam Kearns and Will Maitland-Round’s take on a PSHE day; and Katy Phillips and Calista Wild’s duets in tap shoes and in song.

The show concluded with all the students together performing the song "For Good" from the musical Wicked. The emotion of the moment was overwhelming - there wasn't a dry eye in the house!

Many congratulations to the students for a great evening, and for all their contributions to the performing arts throughout their time at Churchill.

Thank you to Neil Phillips for the photographing the show.
