Whole School Trek & Sponsored Walk
Years 7 & 8 Sponsored Walk: Despite an unappealing weather forecast the rain held back for what was a fantastic day of walking, navigation and camaraderie. I think we are fortunate to have such beautiful surroundings on our doorstep and are able to capitalise on this with such whole school events. The sponsored walk took the students around the back of Thatcher's through the orchard, along the Strawberry Line, through the tunnel and up to the trig point on Wavering Down for some amazing views before returning to the recreation ground in Winscombe for a brief lunch stop on the way back to school. The Sixth Form council met them with refreshments and helped supervise the lunch stop which gave them a good entrepreneurial opportunity, the proceeds of which will go towards their chosen charity and their Ball fund. So many of the students were clearly enjoying the experience over their 10 mile challenge and I hope it leaves them with lasting happy memories. Please bring in all sponsored walk money to give it directly to reception at your earliest convenience. Well done Years 7 and 8.

Years 9 & 10 Trek: Churchill's Trek is unique. Over 600 students and staff trekking for whole day across an area of wild and outstanding natural beauty. This only happens at Churchill Academy. Looking across the Blackdown Moor with views North to Wales and South to Glastonbury Tor, seeing scores of groups of Year 9 and 10 pupils walking, navigating, cooperating and chatting happily, enjoying the countryside as the wild ponies galloped past was an uplifting sight. Putting on the Trek involves the combined efforts of many teaching and non-teaching staff and Sixth Formers. Providing so many students with the opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy each other’s company amid the natural beauty that, although on their doorstep, is so often overlooked makes everyone's efforts very worthwhile. A big thank you to everyone that helped out and to the students who participated enthusiastically and behaved really well.
