Year 7 Football Tournament
On 12th February the Churchill Academy Year 7 Football team took part in a North Somerset tournament at Backwell School. Our team played five matches: we won four, drew one and we did not concede a goal. Our matches were against Nailsea, Gordano, Sidcot, Priory and Clevedon.
Our first match was against Nailsea, a tough game. We had two attempts on goal - from B Skudder and W Smith. Our opposition were also pressing high and getting a few chances out of it. During the game, we stayed solid and stopped them from getting a goal, this lead to a 0:0 finish. It was a good start.
Our second match was against Gordano. We started off well and it paid off from a solo worldie from M Smith, and some great dribbling from N Dennis. This put us in a great state of mind and came back wanting more. Soon enough another opportunity arose, a free-kick just outside the box. C Vann stood up to take the set-piece and a deflection helped it in for the game to finish 2:0.
For our third match, we had the opposition of Sidcot. Earlier on this year we played them in a friendly match at home; they beat us. We knew this was going to be a hard match. Some good passing from O Hall and some good work down the wing from O Griffiths led to a good team goal when B Skudder converted W Smith’s saved shot; we were one nil up. Soon after a chance appeared for W Smith and he took it beautifully to extend the score to 2:0.
The fourth match was another hard one. We were against Priory, whose defence was strong. We managed to string a few passing moves together, which were supported by H Pritchard who was strong at the back. Soon enough a chance appeared: a great pass from B Thomas ended up with a composed finish from W Smith. With a few great saves from JJ Weald, the team managed to deliver an excellent win, to put us top of our group.
Our last match against Clevedon was the play-offs for second and third. It was another hard match but had moments of great football with some lovely skill from J Milton, some neat touches by O Lincoln and some great play by E Smith. Following a clear foul on W Smith in the box, our penalty-taker N Dennis stood up and blasted it to the left out of the keeper’s reach. All we had to do now was see the win off and we did, with A Bird being strong in midfield.
We had come second in the whole of North Somerset. WELL DONE TEAM!
