Year 9 Netball Quarter Final: WESPORT Winter School Games

On Tuesday, 17th January, our Year 9 Netball team played their quarter final match against Saint Gregory’s School, Bath.  Churchill had made it through to this stage after coming runners up in the North Somerset Tournament before Christmas. Saint Gregory’s had won the Bath and North East Somerset Tournament so we knew they would be strong opposition.

After a good warm-up both teams started well with Churchill going 1-0 up after the first couple of minutes. However St. Greg’s soon drew level and began to pull away. Both teams demonstrated some fantastic shooting with special mentions going to Millie Mann, Katie Mackay and Evie Spearing as they made the most of every opportunity they were given.  Half time saw St. Greg’s taking a lead in the game but Churchill’s heads did not fall and they fought right to the end with them narrowly losing the last quarter 6-7.  The final result saw St. Greg’s win and progress through to the semi-finals.

Player of the match:  Katie MackayTeam:  Millie Mann (Captain), Katie Mackay, Evie Spearing, Alex Wilson, Amber Frappell, Toula-May Harris, Steph Osmant and Ella Hutchinson.

Well done girls on a fantastic end to the season!

Year 8 Rugby Festival

Thank you to all involved in the Year 8 Rugby Festival this week which was held at Winscombe Rugby Club and was a huge success. Churchill Academy hosted ten schools from North Somerset in a continuing successful Club - School link. A huge thank you must go to Mr Coughlan and Mr Church for their efforts this year in developing the Year 8 team and assisting with extra-curricular sport, their guidance has developed students' love of the game and for them to achieve a sixth place overall. Well done to students Jack Lewis (Player of the Tournament) and Josh Young (Captain's Player).

On the day, a mixture of Sixth Form and Year 11 students also officiated all games played. Each of these students have been part of a Rugby Referee development programme which started in November. The next stage of the rugby referee course is an option to all, and could potentially open up areas of employment and experience at their local rugby club. Thanks to Benedict Pearce, Thomas Broom, Reece White, Seth Bell, Euan Campbell, Jack Young, Oliver Guckian, Edward Mann, Gregory Humphry and Gabriel Dewey for your help on the day (no easy task!). A special thank you to Billy Mackay who is progressing very well in his rugby refereeing, already qualified and who offered to help on the day.

Year 10 Football

The Year 10 Football team achieved an impressive third position in the North Somerset Football Tournament. Archie Heal displayed a great skill to score a wonderful chipped goal capping off a Player of the Tournament performance.  Congratulations Archie.

U13s chance to shine in Indoor Cricket

Churchill progressed through to the final of the indoor cricket competition beating Sexey's and Fairlands Schools on Tuesday.  A good all round team performance from Jack Harding, Ben Cherson, Henry Robinson, Fred Body, Lewis Barnes, Dillon Perham, Rohan Perkins and Alfie Berenyi. Well done lads!
