  • Free School Meals Expansion from September

    Published 09/07/26

From September, Free School Meals are being expanded to all families receiving Universal Credit. The government has announced two new categories of entitlement:

    Targeted FSM

    •  Pupils from families on UC with an income threshold (income under £7,400 per year)

    • Attracts pupil premium and FSM6 funding

    • Eligibility for HAF programmes

    Extended FSM

    • Pupils from families on UC with no income threshold

    • Does not attract pupil premium or FSM6 funding

    • Not eligible for HAF programmes

Since 2018, there has been a Free School Meal transitional protection policy to ensure that children didn’t lose their free school meals if their family’s income increased. This meant that free school meals entitlement has been typically locked in until the end of the child’s current phase of education (e.g. end of primary or secondary school).

This protection is ending at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.

This means that all existing pupils in receipt of free school meals will need to have their entitlement rechecked before the start of September 2026. If your family’s earnings exceed the FSM threshold, your child(ren) will lose their eligibility and pay for school meals from September 2026.

To apply for Free School Meals for September, all eligible families should submit an application during the summer holidays here: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

Please note: Families who were awarded Free School Meals more than two years ago will have applied through North Somerset Council's previous application system. These families will need to reapply through their North Somerset Citizen's Account (or register for one) as North Somerset Council no longer holds their personal details to contact them or reassess their eligibility.

  • Year 12 Biology Students Enjoy Inspiring Field Trip to Nettlecombe Court

    Published 08/07/26

Last week, our Year 12 Biology students embarked on an exciting three-day residential field trip to Nettlecombe Court, a Field Studies Centre located on the Somerset Exmoor border. The visit provided an invaluable opportunity for students to develop their practical skills, deepen their ecological understanding, and complete essential components of their A Level Biology course.

Throughout the trip, students took part in a range of fieldwork investigations and classroom-based theory sessions, including two of the required practical investigations that contribute to the Practical Endorsement in A Level Biology. They learnt how to measure vertical height along the shore and compared species diversity across the lower, middle, and upper shore zones, gaining first-hand experience of ecological sampling techniques.

The group also explored grassland ecosystems and carried out freshwater invertebrate studies, developing their understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem health. In addition, students learnt how to analyse their findings using a range of statistical tests, an important skill for biological research.

One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to participate in an overnight small mammal survey. Students helped set humane live traps as part of a population monitoring study and were delighted by the success of the survey, which recorded both wood mice and shrews.

The residential concluded with each student completing an individual ecological investigation, allowing them to apply the knowledge and practical skills they had developed throughout the visit.

With fantastic weather throughout the three days, there was also plenty of time to relax and socialise. Evenings were spent enjoying games of rounders and badminton with students from other schools, making the trip both educational and memorable.

The field trip was a tremendous success, providing students with valuable practical experience while creating lasting memories and strengthening their enthusiasm for studying Biology.

  • Sebastian Celebrates a Fantastic First Year with Bristol Cathedral Consort

    Published 08/07/26

Congratulations to Sebastian, who has successfully completed his first year as a member of the Bristol Cathedral Consort.

As the youngest member of the Consort, Sebastian has made an outstanding impression. Following an initial audition for another choir, he impressed the Cathedral's music team so much that they invited him to join the Consort immediately, bypassing the usual probationary period—an exceptional achievement.

To round off a remarkable first year, Sebastian performed Zombie by The Cranberries in Bristol Cathedral. It is believed to be the first time the song has been performed within the Cathedral, and it is certainly a first for a Year 7 student from the Academy.

We are incredibly proud of Sebastian's achievement and look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next. A special thank you also goes to Ryan Davey for supporting and encouraging Sebastian on his musical journey.

  • Leah, Mati & Flo Win Strictly Dance Fever 2026

    Published 03/07/26

Thursday evening saw yet another successful and crowd pleasing ‘Strictly Dance Fever’. The talent on show was sensational, as every performer fought to win and demonstrate their skills to the audience who were jam-packed into the auditorium for the sold-out show. The very difficult task of deciding on the winners was made by the four judges: Mrs Lippe, Miss Cook, Miss Shopland and our current KS4 Dance Captain Hannah.

Three categories were performed on the night; the winner of the solo category was Leah (Year 9). Oviya and Olivia (both Year 10) won the duet category, and this year, for the first time, we had joint winners for the group category: Leah, Mati and Flo (Year 9) as well as Lily, Willow, Amelia and Ruby (Year 10).

The overall winning piece was a technically demanding and showstopping performance performed and choreographed by Leah, Mati and Flo (Year 9), and this proved to be a very popular decision as they were presented with the ‘Strictly Dance Fever’ trophy.

The ‘Best Performer’ trophy was then presented to Elsie (Year 8) for her outstanding performance throughout the show.

Emily was chosen for our 'Future Star' award as she impressed everybody with her energy and beautiful dance style.

On the night, we also presented our two new Dance Captains with their badges - Isabelle will be our new KS3 Dance Captain, and Evelyn will be our KS4 Dance Captain. Both girls have big shoes to fill, but we are confident they will do a fantastic job.

Congratulations to all our winners and a big thank you to everybody who took part in making this evening a fantastic event!

Our Year 10 students took part in the annual World of Work Day, an inspiring and hands-on event designed to help them explore a wide range of potential career paths. Whether their interests lie in design, healthcare, engineering, or something entirely different, the day offered something for everyone.

A highlight of the day was a fascinating session with Avon & Somerset Police, where students heard about the life of a police officer and tested their fitness with a police issued beep test!
