Churchill Academy & Sixth Form fully recognises its responsibilities for child protection.  Our policy applies to all staff, trustees and volunteers working in the Academy.

The main elements of our policy are:

• Ensuring we practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers that work with our children.
• Raising awareness of child protection issues and educating the children with the necessary skills to keep them safe.
• Developing and implementing procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases of abuse.
• Creating a safe environment in which children can learn and flourish.

The designated teacher for child protection is Mrs Lorraine McKay who will be able to help if you have specific questions about the Academy’s approach to child protection.

Prevent acts to safeguard people who are vulnerable to radicalisation in a similar way safeguarding processes are designed to protect people from gang activity, physical/sexual abuse and bullying. It is aimed at supporting people before they become drawn into any criminal activity. You can read more about Prevent in North Somerset here.

What do I do If I have a concern?

You should never worry about passing on your concerns to the Police, the Local Authority or the Safeguarding Leads at Churchill Academy & Sixth Form

In the event of an emergency, phone the Police using the 999 number. If the risks to the young person are not immediate but they are significant, phone the Police using the 101 number.

If the risks are not immediate you can also contact North Somerset Children’s Social Care directly on 01275 888808.

If you are concerned about a member of the Academy you can contact the safeguarding team through our dedicated email address which is monitored during the Academy opening hours.

You will receive an acknowledgment within 48 hours and will be contacted if further information is required. 

Concerns about professionals

You can raise concerns about people who work or volunteer with children in the community through the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO). They are involved in the management and oversight of individual cases.
