Eight Years and Eight Million Pounds Later
The opening of the Humanities area this week marks the completion of over eight years of work at Churchill Academy & Sixth Form, transforming the learning environment to deliver the very best for all of its students.
In 2016, the first stage of a multi-bid campaign to modernise the original 1956 building began, and saw £1.3million awarded for a new Business, IT and Social Sciences block.
This was quickly followed by the award of nearly £5 million for the much larger redevelopment of the Science and Technology block and demolition of the old structure these classrooms vacated.
These significant building projects, along with the Academy’s own ambitions to improve the internal learning environment for students, has ensured state-of-the-art facilities for all of its 1,650 students to thrive and progress.
With the completion of the recently renovated Humanities and Languages areas, new perimeter fencing, and the addition of a fifth house at Churchill, it is almost unrecognisable as the same school of only a decade ago.
“We have been delighted that the Department for Education have recognised the progress we have made and supported our journey to transform the Academy for the betterment of all. These improvements have impacted the very heart of the Academy, improving all facets of teaching and learning life to deliver an outstanding level of education,” said Headteacher Chris Hildrew.
Churchill’s ambitions continue with the refurbishment of prefabricated classrooms with a new, purpose built structure. News of the condition improvement bid, the only source of funding for the Academy, is due in the next few weeks.
