  • Academy Sports Rundown: 29th November 2024

    Published 29/11/24

The weather held out, albeit a little on the frosty side, so we were back to a very busy week in sports at the Academy. Here’s how we got on:

    Netball

Our KS5 girls team competed in a tournament this week. It was a closely fought match, and the girls put in a stellar performance, but the other team claimed the win. Not defeated by the loss, the girls have turned their focus to improving their netball drills for the next tournament!

The Year 8 North Somerset Netball tournament provided a platform for our talented young netballers to showcase their skills and teamwork. Both the purple and green teams demonstrated significant improvement throughout the season, culminating in a strong performance at the tournament.

The purple team secured a commendable third-place finish in their pool, while the green team exhibited remarkable growth and development as a cohesive unit. The team's dedication and hard work were evident in every match, and their positive attitude was inspiring.

    Football

Year 8 progressed in the Somerset Cup tournament this week, securing a solid 5-2 victory against St Katherine’s School!

Year 11 boys were involved in an end-to-end football cup tie this week, losing out 3-2 to Oldfield in a close run game. Congratulations to Will, who was named Player of the Match!

  • Watch Year 12 BTEC Exam Performances of Dixon and Daughters & Into the Woods

    Published 29/11/24

On Tuesday 10th December, at 5.30 pm, our Year 12 Performing Arts students will perform two pieces of theatre as part of their exam.

The first piece is in the Academy Hall and is ‘National Theatres, ‘Dixon and Daughters’.

‘Mary has just been released from prison. She wants to come home and forget all about it but Briana has other ideas. Over a tumultuous two days, a family is forced to confront not just their past but themselves. Even if you refuse to hear the truth, the truth doesn’t go away.’

Age recommended 14+ and running time is approximately 45 minutes.

Our second piece features our Musical Theatre specialists performing extracts from Into the Woods in the Drama Studio. Songs include ‘No One is Alone’, ‘Your Fault’, and ‘Giants in the Sky’. The running time for this piece is approximately 30 minutes.

There is no cost for the tickets but donations would be welcome.  There will be a 20-minute interval between these two wonderful performances where you can purchase drinks and snacks. Proceeds from the interval and donations will go towards our 2026 production ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’.

  • Rave Reviews for our 2024 Christmas Concert

    Published 29/11/24

Our Christmas Concert was a resounding success, wowing the packed audience at The Playhouse. The students brought energy, humour and their high level of musicianship for all to share and kick start our Christmas preparations.

Orchestra grabbed our attention immediately as they opened the concert with Tchaikovsky’s Trepak from The Nutcracker and a Christmas Medley, superbly arranged by Toby.

Concert Band enthralled us with their energetic playing throughout The Incredibles (Giacchino), and clearly also enjoyed the Guns ‘n’ Roses classic Welcome to the Jungle.

This year’s Junior Young Musician winner and runner-up, Joey and Senuli, showed off their musical prowess, captivating the audience with their huge musical talent.

The KS3 Choir performed ABBA’s I Have a Dream before introducing us to an unknown but enticing song written by Britain’s most successful singer/songwriter, Gary Barlow, entitled Don’t Know What I’m Looking For. The Senior Choir were exquisite in their performance of What I Was Made For, from the movie Barbie, by Billie Eilish and Happy Together.

Brass Group, String Group and our Woodwind Group both delighted us with some classic film scores, pop songs, show songs and Christmas tunes before we were treated to a sneak preview of the forthcoming production of We Will Rock You.

The second half of the programme opened with some classic songs performed by our brilliant Soul Band, including Mr Big Stuff, before our Guitar Group rocked the place with an AC/DC Medley and Van Halen’s Jump - this group is a fantastic addition to the huge range of ensembles at Churchill Academy & Sixth Form and is very much open to new members, as indeed are all of our groups.

The final item was our now infamous Junior Choir. This choir of Year 7 and

8 students told the Christmas story in their own way, singing songs which they had themselves composed. The massed choir of around 200 students is always a spine tingling moment and most definitely one of the highlights of the whole school year. Simply put, it was a stunning conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students who performed and expect great things from them in the future, particularly in the music and performing arts fields. Congratulations to all of our performers.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our audience for their unwavering support and appreciation of the arts. We firmly believe that events like these have the power to bring our community together and inspire a love for music and performing arts.

We eagerly anticipate seeing everyone again next year!

  • ‘A Blunt Truth’ visit to educate Year 9 on Knife Crime

    Published 29/11/24

Avon & Somerset Police are working with services throughout the UK on a campaign called ‘A Blunt Truth’, which is dedicated to educating young people on the effects of Knife Crime and what to do if you discover a knife crime victim.

As part of the campaign, British Army Medics and Avon & Somerset Fire Rescue visited Year 9. Every student spent an hour hearing about the tragic effects knife crime has on a community and how it can be prevented.

Students were shown what to do in the event they find a knife crime victim, focusing on the three C’s (Check for danger, Call for help, Cover the wound) and how to use bleed kits which are becoming more commonplace around the UK - the Academy has ordered five to be kept on site.

We are thankful to ‘A Blunt Truth’ for bringing the campaign to the Academy and leaving us all more educated about knife crime.

  • Sir David Attenborough responds to Tommy’s letter about Dolphin Behaviour

    Published 29/11/24

One of our Year 11 students, Tommy, recently wrote to Sir David Attenborough regarding his interest in dolphin behaviours, particularly their treatment of other animals. He enquired whether a documentary on dolphins' aggressive nature has been made or if it is likely to become the subject of an upcoming documentary.

Sir David responded in a wonderful handwritten letter to Tommy informing him that he had not ever made a documentary on this topic, noting that at the grand age of 98, he isn't likely to be going underwater swimming anytime soon either!

It was such a special moment for Tommy to receive this letter and we’re so grateful to Sir David for taking the time to respond.

Take a read of both Tommy’s and Sir David’s letters below.

  • Academy Sports Rundown: Year 10 Boys Visit Bristol City Training Ground!

    Published 22/11/24

On Thursday, thirty-six of our Year 10 boys had the incredible opportunity to visit and play at the Bristol City Football Training Ground, the Robins High Performance Centre. The venue is not usually open to the public as the club’s 1st team, Women's team and Academy teams all train there.

However, our lucky students had the opportunity to play on the Academy pitches, which were referred by academy players. It was an incredible experience for our young players. Students then heard from a member of staff who works with the academy players, giving them a chance to ask questions about the life of an academy player and what it is like to work for Bristol City Football Club.

A massive thank you to Bristol City for this incredible opportunity for our students!

  • The Academy's Green Team Plants for the Future with Woodland Trust Tree Donation

    Published 22/11/24

The Academy’s Green Team was thrilled to receive a generous donation of 30 trees from The Woodland Trust.

Nestled in the heart of the countryside, the Academy spans acres of picturesque land, already home to dozens of trees, including some protected species. The donation was a welcome addition to the school’s ongoing commitment to create a greener and more sustainable future.

On Friday afternoon, the Green Team gathered to plant the new trees around the Turing Building. Among the varieties planted were Wild Cherry, Silver Birch, and Rowan trees. Wild Cherry trees are expected to grow up to 10 metres (30 feet) within a decade, while Silver Birch and Rowan trees will take approximately 20 years to mature. Rowan trees, known for their durability, can live for an impressive 80 to 150 years, ensuring their beauty and benefits will be enjoyed by future generations.

The Green Team, a student club dedicated to environmental awareness, is a point of pride for the Academy. Located in the heart of the countryside, the Academy’s commitment to sustainability is driven by a desire to address climate change and preserve its natural surroundings.

Guided by staff members Mr Davies and Mrs Bones, the students carefully selected planting spots, considering sunlight, wind protection, and water access to give the trees the best start possible. Equipped with shovels and trowels, the team planted each tree with care, ensuring they were well-watered to support healthy growth.

While the students planting the trees may not live to see them in their full glory, they took pride in knowing their efforts would benefit future generations. This tree donation not only enhances the Academy's beautiful grounds but also strengthens the Green Teams initiative of creating a greener future for us all.
