Music

Students experience all three main musical disciplines of performing, composing and listening and understanding. The course therefore builds upon the skills developed in GCSE Music. Listening and analysis work is based around set works in all musical styles including Film Music, Pop and Jazz from the past 50 years alongside classical works.

Subject specific entry requirement: Standard Sixth Form entry plus Grade 6 in GCSE Music and Grade 5 in a suitable performance instrument
Qualification: A Level
Topics and areas covered:

Performance - 30% course marks taken in the form of a recital/ performance lasting for at least eight minutes.

Composition - 30% course marks

Listening and Analysis - 40% course marks (exam)

Future career path: This course can lead to further study in Music at under-graduate level in Performance, Composition or Analysis. It can further lead to a job as Music Therapist, Musician, Private Music Teacher, Secondary/Primary School Teacher, Sound Technician, Broadcaster/film/video, Arts Administrator Broadcast Engineer, Community Arts Worker, Event Organiser, Radio Broadcast Assistant, Radio Producer or Theatre Stage Manager.

As part of the course, you will be involved in composition workshops, visits to performances which are sponsored through the Cavatina Music Trust and are expected to continue having lessons on your main instrument.

 

The Music department offers a variety of extra-curricular opportunities, including

  • Multiple choir and musical groups
  • Christmas Concert and productions at The Playhouse Theatre
